Curving the top of your letters makes them “peel” off the page.
How to:

Sketch your design in pencil. Add slight inward curvature to the tops of the letters.

Add a background shadow behind the tops of the letters. These should be straight.
3
Fill in with pen or marker. Shade the top and bottom of the letters darker than the centers.
