Try combining an illustrated cut out with lettering.

How to:

Sketch your design on the back of the paper. Or, you may find it easier to draw on one sheet, then scan it. Print it in a reverse “mirror image” on the back of the paper you’d like to cut.

Use an X-acto knife and a cutting mat to remove the white spaces, leaving the lines. Be sure all the lines connect somewhere so the picture stays in one piece.
