DIY Padded Storage Stool

Make this padded storage stool in about 30 minutes.

Tips:

1
You’ll need a large plastic crate. These are cheapest in the fall, with the back-to-school supplies. I picked this one up at Wal-mart for $3.50.  Make sure that it has an inner rim that the cushion can rest on.

2
You’ll need some cotton fabric, approximately ⅝ yard. Plan for enough fabric to wrap around the top and sides of the cushion, as well as a piece to cover the underside of the wood.

3
You’ll also need a foam cushion form. I got this pack of four cushion forms for $7 at Wal-Mart, I’ll layer two of them on this crate.

How to:

1
Start by measuring the inside of your crate. Mark your piece of scrap wood to the same dimensions.

2
Use a hand-saw, table saw, or circular saw to cut the wood. Remember to wear safety glasses. (Only an adult should use power tools.)

3
Now cut the foam to the same size as the wood. I decided to double the foam for a softer seat.

4
Cut a piece of fabric to cover the underside of the wood and staple in place. This is optional, but it makes your project look more finished. Make sure you have plenty of fabric before you choose to do this.

5
Flip the wood over so the fabric side is face-down. Layer the foam on top of the wood, then spread the remaining fabric over the top. Flip over.

6
Trim the excess fabric at the corners, being careful not to take off too much.

7
Then wrap the cushion like a present, folding in the fabric at each side. Turn the raw edge of fabric under for a more finished look. Staple in place.

6
To easily remove the cushion top, place your hand in the handle opening and pop the cushion upward.

This crate holds a surprising amount of stuff, and my daughter loves that it does double duty as a stool she can sit on.
