We’re painting an area with vaulted ceilings, so we needed a tall, adjustable ladder. Luckily thediyoutlet.com sent me this 3-in-one aluminum ladder, and it made the job so much easier. It can extend to 11 feet 3 inches tall, but it’s very lightweight so it’s easy to maneuver.
Start by using painter’s tape and tape the edge just like you normally would. (For example, if you’re painting by a ceiling, add the tape to the ceiling.

Next, get out the EXISTING paint color of the surface that is adjacent to the wall you’ll be painting. In my case, that means I’m getting out the white ceiling paint. It’s counter-intuitive, but stick with me.

Now paint over the edge of the tape. This means I’ll be getting white ceiling paint on the wall. I know it doesn’t match, but that’s okay. Just stick with me.

Let the paint dry completely. Do not remove the tape!

Once it’s dry, paint your wall with the new color, like you wanted to in the first place. We’ve chosen to use Rustoleum tintable chalkboard paint. We added three light coats with a foam roller for excellent coverage.

Let it dry, then score the tape with a box cutter. Peel off the tape. Ta-da! Gorgeous edges.

If you’re using chalkboard paint, prime the chalkboard area by rubbing the entire surface with chalk and then wipe it off before using.
Why does it work? Well, no painter’s tape is perfect. At least none that I’ve found. They all have some degree of seepage. But when you paint over the tape with your ceiling paint first, the color that seeps through is white (which is fine, because it matches the ceiling), and then it seals the tape when it dries, creating a barrier that the wall color won’t seep through. So yeah, you have white paint on your wall for a little while, but then you paint right over it with your new color, and the new wall color won’t transfer to the ceiling.
