You can buy wood cut-outs from craft stores. Mine had shapes like carrots and apples for .30 each. But I decided to save even more money and use wood pieces I already had on hand.2
I’m using Sakura Pentouch® paint markers for this project. These contain non-toxic ink that covers smoothly like paint, but dries fairly quickly. There’s no need for brushes or water, and the nibs allow for precision painting. You do need to shake the pens before use, with the nib pointing down. Then gently press down on the nib with the nib pointing up. (I made the mistake of not reading the label, and pressing the nib down on the paper, which made the ink squirt out. So be sure you’re holding the pen with the nib pointing up as the excess air is released, then scribble on a piece of scratch paper to get the ink flowing before moving on to your project.)How to:

Sand all wood surfaces and round off the corners a bit.

Now painting is as easy as coloring! Use the Pentouch® paint markers to turn your wooden shapes into play food. As you can see, the ink covers very well.

Once the ink is dry, you can layer other colors on top. You do want to be careful to not depress the nib directly on your artwork, as that can cause the ink to puddle.

Since these markers come with fine nibs, it’s possible to add fun details like cooking directions.

I turned a block into a sandwich, one into macaroni and cheese, and one into a container of French fries. What about sushi? A box of raisins? Cereal?

Circles can turn into pizza, lollipops, cookies, or cheese.

Spheres can turn into apples, cinnamon rolls, or oranges.

Be sure that all pieces are too large to fit in a child’s mouth, and that the child is old enough to know that the food is for playing, not for licking or chewing.
