Create the illusion of an extra border by utilizing white space.
How to:

For this design, I sketched out the word “nope” and then added a border about ¼ inch thick. I then added shadows to this border.

Any areas of the border that didn’t have a shadow were erased.

Fill in the lettering and the shadow with contrasting colors, leaving the border area white.
