Freehand Lettering

I’ve taken to carrying a small notebook so I can practice freehand lettering. Although I still like to sketch out larger pieces first, it’s fun to just put ink on the page and see where it takes you.

How to:

1
Most of the time, I like to sketch out my hand lettered designs beforehand with a mechanical pencil. But I’ve taken to carrying around a notebook and pen for some freehand lettering when the mood strikes. I prefer to use a gel pen for this, because the smooth ink flow lends itself to a quicker design.

When you’re doing freehand lettering, consider working on a smaller canvas; 4 x 6 is a great size. You feel less committed to perfection when you don’t have to spend as much time filling the page.

3
This is a great opportunity to play around with new lettering styles and mixing font sizes for a different approach. Just have fun with it!

4
If you really love the way it turned out, you can always scan it and resize it larger in Photoshop or AI to create a full-size print.
