This skirt cost only $5 and took less than 2 hours to make. No pattern required!
Supplies:
- 1/2 yard of fabric (42 or 45 inch width)
- 1/2 yard of twill ribbon
- 1/2 yard of netting
- 3/4 yard elastic (but my girl is skinny, you might need a bit more)
- Thread, straight pins, sewing machine
How To:
For this project you’ll use the whole width of the fabric, from selvedge to selvedge.
Begin by cutting all of the netting into strips about 3 inches wide. Layer three strips of netting together. Sew these onto the patterned side of your fabric, beginning at the edge of where the selvedge stops, using 1/4 inch seam. Bunch the netting as you go to make ruffles. When you run out of netting, just add new strips where the last one left off. You won’t be able to tell because it’s ruffly. STOP when you reach the beginning of the selvedge, but leave about 3 inches of loose netting at the end (you’ll use this to cover your seam).
Now sew your twill ribbon on top of the netting, lining up the ribbon with the edge of the skirt. Begin where the selvedge starts. Sew along both the top and bottom edges of the ribbon. Again, leave a couple of inches loose for the moment so that it will go over your seam.
Next fold your fabric in half, right sides together. Use the selvedge as your guide, and sew a seam down it. Be careful not to sew on top of the loose netting or loose ribbon. Turn right side out, and finish sewing down the netting and ribbon on top of the seam.
Now measure your girl from her waist to where you want the skirt to fall. (I left this one a little long because my daughter grows so fast!). Add 2 1/2 inches to that measurement, and cut off the rest at the top.
With the skirt inside out fold over the top 1/2 inch and sew. Now fold over 2 inches, making a pocket for your elastic. Sew, making sure to leave enough room for your elastic to fit, and leaving openings by the seam to thread your elastic through. Using a safety pin to guide it through, thread the elastic through the waistband pocket. Sew the ends of the elastic together.
